More needs to be done to stop this but it won’t be easy. To start with a culturally responsive classroom I think there should be some ground rules set. Orbids of the Skull Sarah Ferreira 1.INTRODUCTION The orbits of a human skull is the space in which the eye and it’s appendages are located. The two orbits in the human skull are conical â€Å"holes† that opens into the midline of the face and point back into the head. Each orbit includes an apex, four walls and a base. The functions of these orbits is firstly to keep the eye â€Å"safe† from any mechanical injury and secondly to supply an entrance for the optic nerve(that transports visual information from the eye’s retina to the vision centers in the brain through electrical impulses) to the brain. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the orbits of the human skull is very important to any doctor in order to comprehend any disorders that patients might experience that are related to the eye socket itself, as well as to understand the surgical management of this region in the human skull. 2.The orbit of the skull 2.1The general location of the orbits in the human skull: The orbit in the human skull lies anterior to the temporal fossa (laterally) and anterior to the middle cranial fossa (medially). It’s also situated superior to the maxillary air sinus, lateral to the nasal space as well as below the anterior cranial fossa. 2.2The shape of the orbit of the skull: The shape of the orbit in the human skull looks like a pyramid that has four distinctive sides (â€Å"walls†), but as one moves posterior, it becomes three sided( toward the apex). ( The apex is also where the optic canal (that contains the central retina vein, ophthalmic artery, symphathetic nerve and optic nerve) opens into the posterior part of the orbit and it forms the tip of this pyramid shaped â€Å"cavity† or structure.) 2.3The bones of the orbit of the skull and their bone classification: There are seven bones that make up the orbit namely the: 1)The Maxillary bone(that is also classified an irregular bone) 2)The orbital plate of the Frontal bone(that is also classified as an irregular bone) 3)The Zygomatic bone(that is also classified as a flat bone) 4)The Ethmoidal bone(that is also classified as an irregular bone) 5)The Lacrimal bone(that is also classified as a flat bone) 6) The Palative bone (that is also classified as an irregular bone) 7) The Sphenoid bone (that is also classified as an irregular bone) All of the above mentioned bones also form part of the human skull. The orbit also contains fissures and fossae where various blood vessels and nerves pass through. 2.4The walls of the orbit The orbit as mentioned earlier consist of four sides or â€Å"walls†. The facial and cranial bones that forms the structure of the orbits also forms these four walls. The walls of the orbit of the skull are as follows: 1)The superior wall/ â€Å"roof† 2)The lateral wall 3)The inferior wall/ â€Å"floor† 4)The medial wall. 3Introduction to the bones of the orbit and the orbital walls that they form: The superior margin and most of the roof of the orbit are formed by the frontal bones of the orbital plate. The inferomedial margin and the floor of the orbit is also formed by the maxilla bone. The anterior part of the lateral wall and the inferolateral margin of the orbit is also formed by the zygomatic bone. Much of the medial wall of the orbit is also formed by the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. There are also a number of ways in which the sphenoid bone contributes to the structure of the orbit: Firstly, the lateral wall posterior to the Zygomatic bone is constituted by the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and secondly the posterior margin of the roof (or superior wall) is formed by the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone.Thirdly the optic canal (that provide a passage for the optic canal and the optic nerve into the orbital space) which is in the apex of the orbit, is also framed by the roots of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone.( This†roots† of the lesser wing a lso connects it to the body of the sphenoid bone.) The medial wall of the orbit( that is between the frontal process of the maxilla and the lateral mass of the ethmoid is completed by the small, curved , lacrimal bone. The posterior angle of the floor or inferior wall is completed by the orbital process of the palatine bone that is insinuated behind the maxilla and underneath the ethmoid bone. 3.1The superior wall or â€Å"roof† The lesser wing of the sphenoid bone constitutes/forms the posterior margin of the superior wall and also surrounds the optic canal( that â€Å"ac† as a channel for the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery). Thus the optic canal is situated posteriorly in the wing of the sphenoid bone that is smaller i.e. the lesser wing and this canal also communicates with the middle cranial fossa. (A fossa is a hollow or a shallow depression.) The superior margin of the bony cavity that contains the human eyeball are formed by the orbital plate of the frontal bone and this bone forms almost everything of the superior wall of the orbit except the posterior extremity of the superior wall. This specific part (the posterior extremity) is formed by the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone. The superior orbital fissure is also situated posteriorly between the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone. (This fissure also communicates with the middle cranial fossa and also provides a passage for the frontal nerve, lacrimal nerve, oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, abducent nerve, nasociliary nerve and lastly the superior ophthalmic vein). A fossa for the lacrimal gland is made by the roof that rises laterally above the level of the rim of the orbit. The superior orbitals margin’s contour is laterally sharp and medially round. The supraorbital notch also leads from the orbit onto the face at the point of transition. On the frontal bones maxillary process, a small trochlear fossa that is in the anterior medial angle of the orbit gives an attachment to the trochlea. 3.2The Medial wall The medial wall consists of 4 bones namely: the sphenoid bone, ethmoid bone, lacrimal bone and maxillary bone. Thus the frontal process of the maxilla largely constitutes the medial margin of the orbit. The shorter maxillary process of the frontal bone are also met by the rising of the frontal process of the maxilla. The maxilla itself contributes little more than the rim to the medial orbital wall. The lacrimal bone, that has an irregular shape, articulates vertically with the frontal process of the maxilla within the orbit. The lacrimal sac’s fossa are framed or formed by both of these bones. The bony nasolacrimal canal is also continuous with the fossa which also proceed into the inferior nasal meatus below( that is the gap(space) covered by the inferior nasal concha. Posteriorly the fossa is bounded by a vertical ridge (that is named the lacrimal crest) and from this the orbital surface of the lacrimal bone increases posteriorly to meet the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. The upper part of the nasal cavity are separated from the orbit by the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. The lateral mass of the ethmoid is pneumatized extensively by the ethmoid air cells and in many skulls this gives the medial wall the appearance or likeness of an unviolated honeycomb. The thinnest part of the wall is the lamina papyracea which means a â€Å"layer as thin as paper† The frontoethmoidal suture is where the medial wall and the roof of the orbit mets. Across this boundary, the ethmoid air cells of the lateral mass extend upward into the overlying frontal bone.The anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina open out of the orbit along the suture line into canals that pass horizontally between adjacent air cells. The first leads onto the upper surface of the cribriform plate, the second into the posterior ethmoidal and sphenoid air sinuses. 3.3The Lateral wall The Zygomatic bone forms the lateral margin and wall of the orbit and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone, completes this lateral wall The greater wing of the sphenoid also does not articulate with the lesser wing of the sphenoid or the maxilla bone and because of this there is two gaps posteriorly. The first â€Å"gap† is the superior orbital fissure that is located between the lateral wall and the superior wall and the second†gap† is the inferior orbital fissure that located between the floor( also called the inferior wall ) and the lateral wall. These 2 fissures converge in the apex of the orbit of the skull that is just lateral to he optic canal. The inferior orbital fissure is roughly in line with the zygomatico-orbital foramen that opens in the orbital surface of the zygomatic bone.h This Zygomatic orbital foramen can be doubled or multiple or it may be so hidden as to be virtually missed by the human eye. 3.4The floor or inferior wall The maxilla(medially) and the Zygomatic bone(laterally) forms the inferior margin of the orbit that is also named the floor. The floor is also the shortest of all the orbit’s walls) The whole of the orbit floor is also virtually formed by the maxilla bone and the Zygomatic bone. The maxilla bone constitutes almost all of the surface of the floor except the extreme lateral angle.The roof of the maxillary air sinus is also formed by the bone of the floor that is very thin. The floor is completed in front of the apex by the small orbital process of the palatine bone.The inferior orbital fissure is left by the prominent infraorbital groove and this prominent infraorbital groove runs directly forward on the surface of the maxilla.This groove (halfway across the floor of the orbit) becomes continuous with the infraorbital canal( thus the infraorbital groove (and canal) is located in the inferior wall of the orbit and in the maxilla’s orbital plate and it â€Å"transfer† the blood vessels and the infraorbital nerve) , which eventually ends in the infraorbital foramen ( on the anterior surface of the maxilla below the orbital margin. 4The neurovascular portals in the orbit’s walls and in the apex( some of them ( the nerves and arteries that go through passages in the orbit and apex) are discussed below.): 4.1The apex From the middle cranial fossa the optic canal opens directly into the apex of the orbit. The ophthalmic branch of the internal carotid artery as well as the optic nerve(that’s covered by all meningeal layers) goes through the optic canal. Between the orbit and the middle cranial fossa the main passageway is the superior orbital fissure. 4.2The Medial wall The anterior and posterior ethmoidal branches of the nasociliary nerve are transmitted by the anterior and posterior ethmoidel foramina. Corresponding branches of the ophthalmic artery and veins draining to the superior ophthalmic vein also accompanies them. 4.3The Roof The supraorbital nerve and vessels are transmitted by the supraorbital notch( or foramen) onto the forehead. The supraorbital nerve is the larger extension of the frontal nerve and the artery is from the ophthalmic artery. 4.4Floor The infraorbital and zygomatic nerves and vessels are â€Å"transferred† by the inferior orbital fissure. The infraorbital nerve and vessels are carried from the inferior orbital fissure to the infra orbital foramen(through this foramen they appear onto the face) , by the infraorbital canal and the infraorbital groove. 4.5Lateral wall The zygomatic orbital foramen transmits the zygomatic vessels and the zygomatic nerves into the zygomaric bone( this happens beyond the lateral end of the inferior orbital fissure) The Zygomatoc facial foramen is the passageway through which the zygomatico facial nerve and vessel appear on to the head. It may happen that there are two foramens rather than one and this is not unusual. The zygomaticotemporal foramen is also the passageway through which the zygomaticotemporal nerve and vessels emerge into the temporal fossa. Picture of the orbits 5Possible clinical application in Radiography In Radiography(orbital Radiogrpahy) injury to they eye or trauma to the eye are detected by orbital x rays. ( Orbital x-rays are x-ray images of the left and right eye sockets in the human skull. It also includes the frontal sinuses and maxillary sinuses). Orbital x-rays are also used to detect changes in the structure of the eye, which may lead to various diseases, as well as to detect foreign bodies in the eye that a opthalmoscope( that’s an instrument that detect foreign bodies in the eye) cannot â€Å"spot† In the Radiography department there is going to be patients who have fractures and diseases of the orbitals. Some of the fractures encountered could be a fracture of the zygomatic arch, displacement of the zygomatico-frontal suture, infraorbital fractures, etc. It will be expected of every qualified Radiographer to take orbital x-ray images of these patients orbitals. To be able to do this a Radiographer must be familiar with complex anatomy of the orbits in the skull and it associated soft tissue . For example if a patients that’s been in a car accident has fractured his orbitals and this resulted in a fracture of the zygomatic arch, then it would be expected of a radiographer to know where this zygomatic arch is located in order to take an orbital x-ray image of that area. A Radiographer must also have sufficient knowledge to be able take an orbital x ray image in the correct angle or to discern when to take several x-rays (from different angles) in order to show the fractur e to the zygomatic arch more clearly. It may happen in serious emergency cases that the Radiographer must firstly look for any damage on the patients face(before he/she can take an x-ray) , and if this radiographer doesn’t know where the facial bones or orbital bones is located then it wouldn’t help taking an image of the wrong facial bone, because that would be of no usage to the doctors seeing the orbital x-rays, because they want to see the fracture in order to make a diagnosis. A doctor may also ask a radiographer if she can see anything abnormal on the x-ray and then again this radiographer must be able to identify the bones and the location of the fractures. Thus it is very important for a radiographer to know where the orbitals lie and of what bones it consists. 6CONCLUSION From the above mentioned research I conclude that it is very necessary for a radiographer to know the orbits of the eye in order to take valuable x-ray orbital images of this area. The orbitals of the human skull is also of utmost importance , because of the fact that it contains the eye, ( a vital organ that is used in almost every activity of a human being ex. from reading the newspaper to crossing the street) and thus patients that has any damage to this area need to be helped swiftly before a minor orbital injury could proceed to a life threatening injury and results in the patient losing his eye. Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564 to Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia degli Ammannati in Pisa, Italy. His father, Vincenzo, was a musician. Galileo was the first of six children (though some people believe seven). His family was not rich but they were of nobility. His family moved to Florence in the early 1570’s. Galileo never married but he did have a brief relationship with Marina Gamba. He met her on one of his trips to Venice. She lived with Galileo and bore three children to him. His two daughters, Virginia and Livia were sent to convents. In 1610 Galileo moved to Florence where he took a position at The Court of the Medici family. He left his son, Vincenzio with Marina. In 1613 Marina married Giovanni Bartoluzzi. Vincenzio joined his father in Florence. In 1581 Galileo went to study at the University of Pisa. His father hoped he would study medicine there. Galileo did not study medicine there but he did study the pendulum. According to legend Galileo watched a suspended lamp swing back and forth in the cathedral of Pisa. Galileo did not make his most notable discovery about the pendulum until 1602. He discovered that the time in which a pendulum swings back and forth did not depend on the arc or isochronism of the swing. At the University of Piza Galileo studied physics. He mainly studied and eventually disproved Aristotle approch on physics. Aristotlians believed that heavier objects fell through a medium faster than lighter objects. Galileo disproved the idea by asserting that all objects (no matter the density) fell at the same rate in a vacuum. To be sure of this Galileo performed many experiments. In most he dropped objects from a certain height. In an early experiment Galileo rolled two balls down a slightly sloped hill and then he would determine their positions after equal time intervals. He then wrote a book about his discoveries called De Muto which means â€Å"On Motion†. In 1592 Galileo was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Padua. Early Christian art was highly influenced by religious, political, and cultural changes. In contrast to the classical, idealistic portrayal of man, Early Christian art took a much more stylized approach to the depiction of man, with a neglected attention to human anatomy. The subject matter of much of the art turned from secular to religious; Christianity to be more specific. Constantine was the last emperor of the Roman Empire to hold undivided power. Under his rule, Constantine created the Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance to all religions. This was of particular importance to Christians, who had been previously persecuted due to their spiritual beliefs. Because of the Edict of Milan, many Christian buildings were erected in addition to the many secular buildings that were transformed into Christian buildings. These buildings housed countless numbers of priceless religious artworks. One such example is the Transfiguration of Christ mosaic located in Saint Catherineâ€⠄¢s Monastery in Sinai, Egypt. When Constantine moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Byzantium, which he renamed Constantinople (modern day Istanbul), the Empire separated. Upon the division of the Roman Empire, Justinian, The Last Roman Emperor, held power over the Eastern Roman Empire from 527 to 565. Justinian was both a political and religious leader. Under his reign, many Christian buildings were constructed. Justinian often associated himself with Jesus Christ in the Byzantine artworks that these Christian buildings housed as a form of propaganda. The Orthodox Church now recognizes Justinian as a saint. Byzantine is a term used to describe eastern Mediterranean art from 330 to 1453, when the Turks conquered Constantinople (Strickland, 1992, p. 24). Mosaics were one of the most common forms of art during this period. They were intended to publicize the Christian creed through their religious subject matter (Strickland, 1992, p. 25). Byzantine mosaics are composed of small, colorful glass or stone squares and rectangles, called tesserae, embedded in wet cement or plaster. These tesserae were arranged in a manner through which they formed images. Typically, Byzantine mosaics are located on the walls and ceilings within a church apse and dome (Strickland, 1992, p. 25). The artists of these mosaics left the tesserae with jagged surfaces to create the sparkling, illuminated effect that distinguishes these mosaics  from those of other periods and places (Strickland, 1992, p. 25). The exteriors of Byzantine Christian structures were very plain in contrast to the elaborately decorated interiors. The awe-inspiring mosaics and icons brought the focus of the buildings to the interiors. Perhaps this was a method to spread the word of God by attracting people to come inside the buildings. Byzantine Emperor, Justinian, ordered the construction of he Monastery of the Transfiguration, more commonly known as Saint Catherine’s Monastery because the relics of Saint Catherine of Alexandria are said to have been inexplicably transported there, at the foot of Mount Moses (Wikipedia, 2006). The monastery houses the Chapel of the Burning Bush, which was ordered built by Constantine’s mother, Helena (Wikipedia, 2006). The Chapel of the Burning Bush is located at the site where Moses purportedly saw the burning bush (Wikipedia, 2006). Saint Catherine’s Monastery is now one of the oldest active monasteries in existence. The monastery survived Islamic dominance over the region due to a document that Mohammed supposedly signed himself, granting his protection over the monastery (Wikipedia, 2006). Saint Catherine’s Monastery allegedly gave Mohammed political asylum from his enemies (Wikipedia, 2006). In addition, a Fatimid mosque was built within the fortifications of Saint Catherine’s Monastery, thus creating further protection of the monastery from Islamic invasion (Wikipedia, 2006). Without the protection of Mohammed and the mosque, Saint Catherine’s Monastery would have been destroyed, and all of the irreplaceable artworks within its walls would have been lost. Byzantine mosaics contain many characteristics that distinguish them from the rest. The typical gold background of a Byzantine mosaic creates a sense of weightlessness within the figures, as if they are floating. Byzantine artists depicted sacred figures with halos, separating them from the other figures. With nude images having been forbidden, one can hardly make out the anatomy of the fully clothed figures. Though it is evident that symmetry was greatly appreciated, it is also evident that the mosaics lack perspective.  The figures depicted in the mosaics are flat and frontal facing with linear details. They are often slim with almond shaped faces and large eyes. The images depict little to no movement, creating a sense of stillness. These highly stylized Byzantine mosaics show disregard for Greco-Roman ideals. On an expedition set out by the University of Michigan in search of sites to excavate in the Near East, the staff spent five days at Saint Catherine’s Monastery (Forsyth, 1997). They discovered that the mosaics within the monastery had undergone little restoration since the time of Justinian (Forsyth, 1997). As a result, most of the works were in bad condition and on the verge of collapsing (Forsyth, 1997). Mosaic restorers came in to save the mosaics, which could have been lost forever (Forsyth, 1997). After they secured the mosaics, the restorers cleaned them (Forsyth, 1997). The mosaics now appear in their original state (Forsyth, 1997). One of the most known mosaics restored was the Transfiguration of Christ (Forsyth, 1997). The Transfiguration of Christ is located in the main church, Katholikon, in the apse over the high altar. The subject of this mosaic was an appropriate selection to portray in Saint Catherine’s Monastery because of its location at the foot of Mount Moses (Watson, 1999). In Christianity, the story claims that Jesus led three of his apostles, Peter, John, and James, to pray atop a mountain. It was here that Jesus transfigured, with his face shining like the sun and wearing bright white clothing. On both sides of Christ, Moses and Elijah appeared. Overhead, a brilliant cloud appeared, and God’s voice emerged from the cloud proclaiming, â€Å"This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.† It was then that Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah about his upcoming death. The artist of this mosaic is unknown because artists went unrecognized until much later. This mosaic is in the form of a triumphal arch, bordered by medallions occupying the busts of the twelve apostles, fifteen prophets, Longinus the Abbot, John the Deacon, two angels, and a Greek cross in the top, center (Watson, 1999). Jesus Christ is depicted in the center of the mosaic with black hair and beard. He was placed in an oval mandorla with a cross and a bright yellow circle depicting his illumination behind his head.  Rays of light are shown coming from Christ’s body. In addition to the mandorla depicting Christ’s holiness, this was done to make Christ the emphasis of the mosaic as well as to distinguish him from the other figures. Elijah is shown on one side of Christ, while Moses is shown on the other. Beneath Christ, Peter, John, and James are portrayed with awe (Watson, 1999). The Transfiguration of Christ contains all the elements of Byzantine mosaics. It has a bright gold background. The figures are dematerialized and one cannot tell which figures were intended to be floating and which are not. One can hardly make out the figures beneath the clothing and the only skin shown is on the figures’ faces, hands, and feet. All the figures were placed symmetrically around Christ, making him the focus of the mosaic. The halo and mandorla around Christ show his holiness. Only slight movement is shown through the figures’ poses. The figures are very flat, despite the attempts of the artist to show shadow and overlapping. All of the figures are slender with almond shaped heads and large eyes. One can hardly see perspective when observing this mosaic. In conclusion, religion, politics, and culture had a significant influence on The Transfiguration of Christ, and all Early Christian art for that matter. With the Edict of Milan legalizing Christianity, the focus of art turned from secular to religious, changing the course of art forever. The Edict of Milan made it possible for Christians to practice their spiritual beliefs openly, leading to Early Christian art. Early Christian art can be credited with the spread of Christianity. One might wonder if Christianity would be as prominent as it is today had it not been for these artworks, or would it have died off a long time ago. Without Early Christian art, one might wonder when or how today’s modern day art would have evolved.

These three different points of view in a dream add up to one big surrealistic nightmare scene. It is also important to note that this scene was considered to be â€Å"notorious† (Chung, 2006, p. 129) during that era, for its unconventional use of camera work. During and after the 1950s, there is an â€Å"increase in the number of dark, provocative and original films. (Mann, 2008, p. 12) and The Manchurian Candidate was one of them. It was â€Å"stylistically ambitious† (Mann, 2008, p. 12) and can be considered a breakthrough in cinematogr aphy during that era. This scene alone had to be shot 3 different times, as each individual point of view comprised of different elements and actors. The platoon was captured and brainwashed into thinking they were attending a ladies horticulture club meeting, when in fact they were present and sitting in a Communist meeting. The camera then does a 360 degrees slow panning shot from the lady speaking, Mrs.Whittaker, to everyone present in the scene, listening to the talk. However, as the camera makes a full round and returns to the start, gone was Mrs. Whittaker, and in her place stood an East Asian doctor giving the Russian and Chinese generals a speech about the brainwashed American soldiers. This panning shot builds up suspense, as the camera slowly pans around the venue, showing that there were only ladies present. It delivered a shock to the audience, who expected to see Mrs. Whittaker after the camera makes a full round, to find out that the lady was gone and replaced by a man instead.This slow panning movement also gave the scene a dream-like quality, which is a characteristic often associated with the theme of surrealism. The scene with the doctor and Communist generals reflected the â€Å"reality† of which the soldiers are unaware of, as they were brainwashed. The camera used a low-angle shot to reveal the amphitheatre filled with Communists. It was positioned behind the soldiers, as if they were looking up to those seated. This is to show that the American soldiers caught were at the mercy of those Generals present, to show authority from those seated above and around the amphitheatre.Even though they are under the mercy of the Communists, the soldiers showed no sign of fear as they were brainwashed into thinking they were facing a group of women instead. Hence the use of camera angle here provides a sort of contradiction to reality, it showed Communist authority even though the soldiers displayed no fear. Another groundbreaking use of cinemat ography can be found in the scene where Johnny Iselin was confronting the Secretary about the â€Å"number of Communists in the Defense department† with Eleanor Iselin manipulating her husband.In this scene, the Secretary was giving a press conference and Johnny Iselin stood up, and demanded to know why are there communists present in the Defense department. The scene was constructed such that the Secretary was at one end of the room, while Johnny was the other end. Yet they were able to appear in one frame, with the use of juxtaposition. As the press conference was broadcasted live, the confrontation between both parties were filmed and showed on television screen.Whenever the Secretary is in frame, Johnny Iselin would appear on the screen of a small television at the corner of the frame, thus making both parties visible onscreen even though technically, they are at different ends of the room. This use of framing and juxtapose imagery echo them theme of â€Å"surrealismâ₠¬ . Surrealism often uses incongruous juxtapositions to highlight conflicts (Strom, 2003). In one particular scene, the mastermind of this confrontation, Eleanor Iselin, appeared in the foreground, with Johnny in the background, and the Secretary reacting angrily on the small little television screen at the corner of the frame.Every action was combined in one frame capturing the whole shot, filled with conflict and movement. This framing brought the tension of the film up a few notches and audiences were able to feel the impending explosion of anger between the characters. The unconventional use of cinematography aspects in this film successfully brings forward the theme of Surrealism, with its â€Å"unusual framings and camera movements† (Strom, 2003, p. 8), which are styles indebted to Surrealism. Editing The different use of editing was also one of the most noted aspects of The Manchurian Candidate.According to Carroll (2003), â€Å"editing, or montage, was generally cel ebrated as the most important, essential characteristic of cinema† (p. 153). Hence the right choice of editing technique would set the pace and coherency of the film. This would bring us to the editing pace of the film- the long takes versus the accelerated montage. The scene that showcased a long take, happened when in Major Marco’s train ride from Washington to New York. Marco was feeling jittery and nervous, thus he decided to leave his train seat and go to the back of the train for some fresh air.He arrived at the last carriage, and stood with his back leaning against the wall. A woman followed Marco and entered the same carriage. She had observed Marco from before, and decided to follow him into the back. Marco and the woman began to strike up a conversation, with random small talks that made no sense. This whole scene involved no cuts at all, all shot at one go and thus showcasing the aspect of a â€Å"long take†. The long take builds on the tension between the meeting of two strangers, showing the entire conversation between Marco and the woman, despite it being nonsensical and weird.The audience took in the scene at one go, after which it leaves them wondering â€Å"what lies underneath this exchange of words between the Major and this woman? † The long take establishes a fact that this scene is important, as it â€Å"intensifies† a shot (Goldberg, n. d), contradictory to the fact that the content of the scene is random and consist of small talks only. As opposed to a long take, which consists of virtually no cuts, an accelerated montage consists of shots with increasingly shorter lengths.With regards to The Manchurian Candidate, the accelerated montage editing aspect occurs during the â€Å"Convention† scene, where Raymond Shaw was sent on a mission to assassinate the President. In this particular scene, Sergeant Raymond Shaw was instructed by his mother to shoot the newly elected President at the Madison Squar e Garden, with Major Marco scrambling to stop Shaw from accomplishing his mission. The establishing shot of Madison Square Garden showed Raymond walking through rows and rows of empty tiered seats, arriving at a small room high above the arena.He positioned his rifle as he prepares for his mission to assassinate the elected President while he was giving his speech. As crowds filled the arena, Major Marco struggles to locate Shaw in hopes of stopping him. The whole sequence was edited with the cross-cutting technique. Through cross-cutting, it helps to create tension and delivers the sense of thrill when the audience sees Shaw preparing to fire his rifle, as Marco runs frantically to stop him. From the first few shots of Shaw preparing his rifle and locating his target to Marco searching frantically for Shaw, was edited with shots and cuts that got shorter and shorter.It adopted the technique of Accelerated Montage, which serves to create tension and keep the audience at the edge of their seats. As this is the climax of the film, by using cross-cutting and accelerated montage, the film manages to capture the audience’s attention and builds a highly thrilling and exciting sequence. Motifs The Manchurian Candidate makes use of several motifs in this film to drive home its message and to develop its theme. One of the most glaring motifs used in this film would be the Red Queen, or the Queen of Diamonds.The Queen of Diamonds card had appeared several times in the film, particularly during scenes that involved Raymond Shaw being brainwashed. In this film, the Communists had conditioned Shaw’s brain into receiving commands and fulfilling them like a robot would. However, this brainwash condition can only be activated when Shaw hears the line â€Å"Why don’t you pass the time by playing a little game of solitaire? † After which, Shaw would proceed to take out a stack of cards robotically and began playing.As he plays the game, he would even tually draw out the Queen of Diamonds card, and upon seeing the card it would fully activate Shaw’s brainwashed condition. At first glance, it may seem that the Queen of Diamonds motif is played out to trigger Shaw’s mental condition. However, as the film progresses, the intent of using the Queen of Diamonds began to clear up- that the Queen of Diamonds was linked to Shaw’s mother, Eleanor Iselin and later in the film, his soon-to-be wife, Jocie (Blakesly, 2007).According to Blakesly (2007), the Queen of Diamonds card represented â€Å"an adamant woman, his mother, someone Raymond would rather not see†. During the first few scenes, Shaw admitted that he â€Å"despised and loathed his mother†. It was eventually revealed that Shaw’s mother was also part of the Communist conspiracy, and a woman hungry for political power. Hence, the card that would trigger Shaw’s mental condition was picked out to be the Queen of Diamonds, which signifie s his mother and hinted that his mother had a connection with the Communists. As mentioned above, the Queen of Diamonds is also known as the Red Queen.In this case, it represented Communism as this film was shot and based on the Cold War, which was ongoing during that time. Blakesly’s analysis surmises that: Another triggering device for Raymond’s conditioning is when he looks upon the Queen of Diamonds, the Red Queen, with the concomitant relationship of â€Å"red† to the â€Å"Red scare†, the communism from which the left in North America, with rare exceptions, still recoils. (p. 218) Besides being a figure representation of Shaw’s mother, the Queen of Diamonds also took on the representation of Communism.Hence it would make sense to why Shaw would fall into a state of â€Å"brainwashed condition† upon seeing the Queen of Diamonds card- he was being controlled by the Communists, with the card serving as a reminder that Communism took over his mind. Other than the Queen of Diamonds motif, the film also adopted Abraham Lincoln as a motif. The use of Abraham Lincoln ranges from obvious pictures of Lincoln himself, hanging in the Iselin house to a more subtle form, where Johnny Iselin dresses up at Abraham Lincoln in a masquerade party.The Iselins were from the Right-Wing, or Republican party. The use of Lincoln signifies the stand that the Iselins take within political context and also to serve as a kind of contradiction between right and wrong. Abraham Lincoln was a prominent leader of the Republican Party. According to Redding (2008), the film was â€Å"mediating symbolically on the political heritage of Lincoln’s republic among a corrupted public sphere†. Lincoln was used a symbol to represent America, and the director’s portrayal of the Iselins served as a satire of the America politics during that time.Johnny Iselin, the Senator, was portrayed as a drunk, impulsive and rash person. He often con fronted the government with issues concerning the communist, when in fact; he is also part of the communist conspiracy to take over the American government. This is a parody of â€Å"McCarthy†, who was a rash and impulsive Senator from the Republican Party. During the time he acted as a Senator, he often appeared drunk and caused a lot of controversy. Thus the portrayal of Johnny Iselin based on McCarthy, and the images of Lincoln all served to fuel the director’s satire on the political situation.During the masquerade party scene, Johnny Iselin dressed up as Abraham Lincoln, a contradiction as he is working with the communists whereas Lincoln was regarded as a righteous politician in the past. To further highlight the contradiction, Johnny’s wife, Eleanor Iselin dressed up as Bo Peep, a character which symbolizes innocence and naivety. However, as mentioned previously, Eleanor was anything but innocent. She worked hand in hand with the communists in order to ga in political foothold. Thus, this portrayal also serves to show a contradiction between right and wrong, righteous and evil.Portraits of Abraham Lincoln decorated the Iselin house, and in a particular scene, where Eleanor was confronting Raymond about his love interest with the daughter of a Senator from an opposition party, Lincoln was â€Å"staring† down at the confrontation. This is yet another example of contradiction between right and wrong, the mother being an evil influence was threatening Raymond to give up his love and Lincoln’s portrait in the background serves to remind us light will prevail, as the portrait was hung above of Eleanor as she speaks.The different motifs of this film helped shaped the entire plot and provided audience with clues; when they see the Queen of Diamonds they immediately would know that Raymond Shaw would be brainwashed. It also helped to bridge certain morals or theme of the story with visual elements, like the battle of right and e vil was shown through the portayal of the Iselins versus Abraham Lincoln iconography. Conclusion This paper discussed how use of cinematography, editing helped bring across the theme of surrealism, and delivered a thrilling effect while the motifs helped bridge the Theme of The Manchurian Candidate with the use of visual elements.In conclusion, The Manchurian Candidate made use of highly unconventional cinematography and editing aspects that successfully showcased the theme of â€Å"surrealism† and effectively created tension and thrill, for the audience.
